What is Self Help Plus (SH+)?
This 5-session stress management course developed by the World Health Organization is for groups of up to 30 people. It is designed for adults experiencing stress, regardless of their location or circumstances. It effectively reduces psychological distress and prevents mental disorders. Its flexible format makes it an excellent complement to other mental health interventions, an initial step in a stepped care program, a community intervention within broader community programming, or as an addition to corporate employee benefits plans. The curriculum is adapted to fit the cultural context of the participants, ensuring relevance and effectiveness.

Introduction
• Participants are introduced to SH+ through community outreach, healthcare providers, nonprofit organizations, and employers.
• They receive information about the purpose of the program and how it can help manage stress and improve well-being.
Materials
• Participants receive the SH+ materials, which include audio recordings and an illustrated booklet. These materials are provided in multiple languages to ensure comprehension and engagement.
Group or Individual Setting
• Participants can choose to join a group setting facilitated by a Helper or use the materials individually. In group settings, they benefit from the shared experiences and support of other participants.
Listening to Audio Sessions
• Participants listen to five audio sessions, each lasting about 90 minutes. The sessions are designed to be engaging and easy to follow, guiding participants through various techniques to manage stress and cope with adversity.
Following Along With the Booklet
• While listening to the audio sessions, participants follow along with the illustrated booklet that provides visual aids, exercises, and summaries of key points, enhancing the learning experience.
Follow-Up and Support
• In some cases, participants may receive follow-up support from Helpers. This support helps reinforce the techniques learned and provides additional assistance if needed.
The SH+ program consists of five audio-guided sessions, with one session per week. Each session lasts approximately 90 minutes. This pacing allows participants to gradually build and integrate new skills into their daily lives.
The SH+ program is for individuals experiencing psychological distress, often due to challenging life circumstances such as transitions, conflict, or other traumatic events. It is not for those having a severe mental illness, severe cognitive and/or neurological impairment, severe substance use disorder, or high risk of suicide. It aims to equip participants with practical skills to manage stress and improve their overall mental well-being through a guided self-help approach.
